Bring extra oil and other fluids. Make sure you have a full size spare that works, not a bad idea to have an extra tire on hand. Bring a good set of hand tools, and maybe an extra belt.

Biggest thing you can have on your side, though, is triple A.

I've got AAA gold, and I get 150 miles of free towing 3 times a year. If you use it once, you've already made up the $75 cost of the membership.

Also, food, blanket, road flares, cb or cell....a lot of the stuff I'd recommend you can google for a "winter car kit"

Jeeze, living in a place that gets real winter weather I just assumed everyone had these things for daily use.

I keep at minimum a space blanket and regular blankets in all my vehicles. You just never know.

With that long of a trip, make sure you have a way to charge your cell phone.

I got canned food, extra sweatshirts, and more in mine. We aren't alaska, but buffalo does get drilled sometimes.

A set of tow straps wouldn't hurt.

From where in South Dakota, to where in Oregon? 1600 miles would be hard to do without a stop over. If you can afford it figure on doing it in two days with a cheap hotel room about half way.
x2 on Gee oh Dee figuring if you live where you get serious winters you should already have cold weather stuff.
I would use I-84 if it isn't to much out of your way. Lolo and Look out pass aren't fun in the winter if it gets bad, plus they are slower going.

AAA would solve that, and you'd have extra room for other things.

Or you could pay attention to your gas gauge.

C'mon, it's a Jeep. Replace the gas gauge with a sign that just says "HAHA, Pay up, sucker!" and you'd barely know the difference

I loled at that... Also if I were you id make sure you plan your trip alot more carefully then you would if it was summer. Some parts of the highways can get bad. Also update the people your going to see once you stop, just give them a quick call and tell them where you are.

I would rather have extra gas than wait on AAA and there are alot
of unknown varibles that may or may not come into play. Just my
