Default Riv Nut

hi recently read bout the Riv Nut and can't seem to grasp the concept...what is the purpose? what do they do?

(I think i understand that on a jeep we could use them for replacing broken bolts in our subframes for say the trans x-member or rear bump stops...)

please explain

If you need to fasten two things together and one has a blind hole, or the back side is inaccessible where you can't install a normal nut, the riv-nut can be installed and the bolt will thread into it holding the parts together.

so it would work in place of a snapped off bolt in our subframes as long as the hole is drilled out...correct

I used to use them when I mounted computer stands to the floor in phone company vans. They work great for light duty bolt on things, but I would not rely on them for heavy things or suspension parts. They can pull out of the sheet metal and even crack and tear the surounding metal if there is a lot of vibration and stress.
