Unless you already have the parts I wouldn't waste the money on the d35. But if you already did

You need
A press
Rachet
Torqe wrench
And a tool to measure backlash

^^This, as far as tools. You'll need a yoke holder and a dial caliper too. Brake cleaner, shop rags, transmission assembly lube, and gear oil. A buddy to help is always a good thing too

I'm currently in the process of re-gearing mine axles (D30, 8.25). I have the front done and the rear starting to go back together.

Start with that then. Don't waste time or money on something you're just getting rid of any way.

If you can find an 8.25 out of a cherokee, it's a direct bolt in (may have to adjust driveshaft length, can't remember). If you get a 8.8 that wasn't in a cherokee already, then you'll have to cut off all the mounts and perches, then weld on everything to fit under the cherokee. I know there are some companies that sell the mount and perch kit, but you'd have to weld them on or have a shop weld them on.

I ran my D35 on 32's for a long time before I stumbled across the 8.25. Got it because it was a decent deal and basic swap.

You'll have to press bearings off and on. It's also a good idea to keep the old ones (as long as you don't trash em pulling them off) so you can grind them out just a tiny bit to use as set up bearings.
