i dont mind getting them to work on thats what i do lol i like makin money off of people that eather dont know or dont want to learn but you would think if your into this kinda stuff that you would like to know all that you can and do it all yourself !!!

 

Since I threw a rod on New Years day it looks like I'll be learning how to change an engine......not about to take it to a shop, wallets not that big.

 

believe it or not changing an engine is quite a straight-forward task. much easier than diagnosing a problem, or doing differential work.

 

for sure book time is like 6-7 hours did mine it went for 280k and also throwed a rod

 

Only time my XJ has gone to a shop is when i didn't have time or the tools to do it right.

Front springs, short on time and couldn't get a set of spring compressors localy before going wheeling. Also had a shop install my t-case skid because my stock one was so mangled. they threw it on a lift got it off and got the new one on in less then 4 hours. Would have taken me at least a day or more.

I will also pay for gear installs as I have no desire to learn how to do that right now.

As for oil changes I pay, kinda, place used to sponcer my buddies autocross car and has kept the deal all I pay for is the time no charge on oil so its like $20 to get the oil changed in the Ram or the XJ

 

See gear changes really not that hard if you have a micrometer sand puller and torque wrench all gear sets come with instructions and diagrahms its pretty easy

 

I dont mind doing work myself. I have swapped an engine and a rear main seal in an '87 YJ and a starter(huge pain, worse than YJ engine) and clutch on a '95 Sonoma, along with basics like oil, plugs, flush radiator. But being in the navy now, I dont always have the time for various projects like these myself with pre-deployment work ups going on. With only being in port for 2-3 weeks at a time, I would rather pay someone else to do it than crawl around myself.

 

The only shop I take my XJ to is my school's auto shop. When I bring it in, I work on it myself .

You're not a real Jeeper if you can't build it yourself either, that just makes you a wannabe in my opinion!

 

I disagree, being a Jeeper is a state of mind, not a set of skills. Its about watching out for your fellow jeeping bretheren, giving a hand when possible, whether on trails or on forums, and having a more laid back attitude about life in general. Ok, my head hurts, thats enough deep thoughts for the year.

My lady friend is a Jeeper and she doesn't know how to do an engine swap. And that doesn't mean squat.

 

I bring my jeep to a shop all the time and I get discount on parts and labor is free.

True I guess, I mean when it comes down to it a real Jeeper is someone who helps out other wheelers. If I ever see another Jeep on the trail with a problem I know I'll be the first to assist them!

 

My tech class has an alignment rack and I can do inspections aswell but they won't let me do an alignment or inspect it because of my lift so I'm forced to take it to a shop to do those things. =/ Everything else, I do myself or I have a friend help or teach me! I've put so much work and time into my Jeep, I love being able to look at my jeep and if anyone ever asks I can tell them I did all the work myself; I built it up.
