x2, I don't use flux on anything smaller than 1/4". I see a lot of people getting into welding picking up a cheap flux core because it's cheaper than a solid MIG machine then wonder why their welds on sheet metal look like ****. The wider the puddle needs to be the better off flux is. You also can't just stop and restart on flux, it's like stick welding, you have to go back to the previous welds and hit them with a chipping hammer and wire brush to get the top layer of slag off before starting again.

A lot of flux wire is only for vertical welding as well so you have to pay attention to what kind of wire you're using.

I use both welders daily mine are a 125 lincoln mig i use for 3/16ths and less and i have a 220 lincoln stick welder i use for 1/4 and thicker stick welding is definitely harder to learn but to me makes a stronger weld when my mig welder cant get deep penetration plus welding rods are alot cheaper to buy then welding wire

Getting arc is easy. Just tap or strike. Make sure you got a good ground. Try tig welding with your feet spread while pushing down on the pedal and doing an over head weld.
