Default Question About Rust

I have a bit of rust on my XJ and I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth fixing. I'm hoping it's not too bad and o can get it done in the summer. I'm just unsure because of where the rust is and how hard it would be to fix. Any advice is appreciated!

My 2 door was rusty at the same places. It was alot worse and it has more along the rockers. A local body shop quoted me at 1000 to replace everything with new steel. It ended up costing just over 800. That was without paint work they just primered everything.

Go around to your local body shops and get a few quotes

No that was both rockers. Including the price of the rockers.

That's not bad, but it will get worse if you don't get to it. If you want to wait for summer, slow it down with Fluid Film. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=fluid+film...-1&ia=shopping

Three things to know about rust:
  1. It never sleeps.
  2. It's never lonely.
  3. However bad it looks, it's worse.

wow. $45 you could of picked up some 2x6 steel and had a nice slider to also stiffen up your unibody.

I was thinking of doing it myself but I'm not the most confident in my hands lol. I do have a friend who can weld though. I may try and see how bad it is as soon as it wants warms up a little bit here. I've got a shop that quoted me $1200 for both sides painted.

I found a guy who wants to fix the rust with epoxies. He says it'll never rust after and he has some great examples of work he has done. I've never heard of this though, and he's charging $500. Any thoughts?

If he's going to coat the existing rusty metal, run fast, run far. That rusted stuff has to come OUT. It must be cut back to clean metal or it will just spread.

If he's going to cut out all the rusted metal and replace it with some kind of epoxy.... maybe worth looking at.

By the way, I recently found out that rusted through holes like that will cause a vehicle to fail safety inspection here in Virginia, as it's a path for exhaust gasses to get into the vehicle. That's probably true in other states, too. Just FYI.

Yes he's looking to cut out all of the rust and replace with new metal and epoxies. I'll check it out some more, it's it amazing to fix it for that price!

Yeah, some epoxies are amazing. That's what holds the tiles on the space shuttle, IIRC.

If you go that route, please post plenty of pics! I'm sure a lot of us would like to know about it.
