Oil Filter Adapter Deletion ?
For your consideration and comments ----
Most of us who have a passing understanding of the engine oil filter mounting to the block on the 6 cyl. 4.0 L engines also know what a problem the OEM arrangement is concerning oil leakage. There is some very informative information on the web addressing the procedure/s needed to repair the leaks and putting the mountings back to factory specification using factory replacement O-rings, etc.
What I would like us to consider now is the deletion of the factory alum. adapter casting as an alternative method of solving this oil leak problem.
My suggestion is to remove the 90 degree adapter housing entirely and proceed as follows;
1) The cast iron block has a circular machined surface and a 3/4"-16 (SAE) female threaded hole in the center. You will need to purchase a threaded nipple to screw into the hole from which the adapter housing retaining bolt ( Part # 53020237 ) was removed. The nipple may be found at the NAPA store near you.
2) You will need to purchase a oil filter canister that has a 2 5/8" O-ring seal and a 3/4"-16 female thread (SAE) and a short overall height of 3 " max.in order to fit between the block mounting surface and the right side frame rail.
Does anyone see, know of, or anticipate any problem/s with the above suggested solution to the oil leak problem that is present in the original factory mounting configuration ?
