If you used a good rubber Felpro gasket it's re-usable.

You don't need to use sealer on a silicone gasket.

Change your oil with whatever kind if oil and filter you want and let it run for 5 minutes. Then drain the oil, pull the valve cover and oil pan. Clean both of those real well and replace the CCV ports and tubes that are on the valve cover. Clean out all the crud around your lifters, springs, and rods. Pull each rod one at a time and clean them out putting them back in the exact way they were before pulling them (that's why you do it one at a time). Once it's all cleaned up (use non-chlorinated brake cleaner) put everything everything back together with new gaskets and either a WIX or NAPA Gold oil filter for a '79 Ford F100 with a 302. Use Rotella T5 or T6 as your oil from now on. Put in a quality air filter and you should be good to go.
I wish I had my own house with a small garage, this makes me want it more.

So, what is with the specific year Ford 302 oil filter fitting, I'm assuming, the regular Jeep 4.0L?

I'm not sure who told you that but it would be wise to not listen to them anymore. The Fel-Pro silicone calve cover gaskets are reusable and never need RTV or bathroom caulk or whatever you used. If you only did that on one side I wouldn't be too worried, you should be able to remove the VC to complete the CCV elbow replacement.

WIX 51515 is a larger (taller) filter with better flow that fits our engines and has the same bypass configuration. It's the most commonly used oversize unit for Jeeps. WIX 51452 is very similar but more rugged.

It's easier for me to remember a '79 Ford 302 than a filter number. Just the way my brain works. Like Salad said, it's a larger filter with better flow than the standard 4.0 filters.

First, thanks for all of the information. I just want to confirm this because you know I am going to run into hard heads in life that are going to say otherwise - there is only real benefits from using this oil filter and zero threat to the engine with a 100% interchangeability between them, right?

More rugged in what way? Thicker walled construction or on the interior materials or both?

TIA.

Oh man. Damn dealership needs to get their **** together. Never leave without inspecting what you ordered. Went to pick up my CCV elbows, and had to rush out to get to the bank in time. Checking it out in the car...hmm..this doesn't seem right.

I got the right front one, but the rear is just a plain elbow. No fitting. Nothing. Part number was right, even said "with fitting" on the package. So I went online with the part number and it is correct, they just had the wrong part in the bag.

So here it is:

91-93 Cherokees have a fitting that's more of a rubber washer than a gasket (which is why I was having trouble finding the right thing in the first place). Actually comes out easily from the VC. Just a quarter turn to unlock it and it pops out.

Part number is 53030492 for the rear and 53030591 for the front.

That's for 91-93 YJ, XJ, MJ and 93 ZJ

Once I had the part number they're easy as heck to find online. Ordered the right thing, will return the wrong one to the stealership and get my 14 bucks back.

Also, glad I'm doing the VC and cleaning everything up. I looked inside the CCV port......eeewwwwwww

EDIT: Part number for the CCV/MAP tube is 53030728-M for 91-96 XJ, YJ, MJ, ZJ

Yes. A lot of people run the 51515 here. Nothing but goodness! Of course it holds a little more oil too.

Yes. More solid construction internally and thicker external wall, the 51452 is also listed in applications as a transmission filter (higher burst pressure rating) and on diesel off-road and construction equipment. By WIX's own admission the 51515 is a "street" filter by comparison. In other regards the specifications are like the OE filter.

Ouch... sounds like a mess! Glad you got somewhere though and got the right part!

Thanks very much for all the info! I don't think you can go wrong with a larger filter and a little bit more oil to boot.

The 1459 filter from Napa (Wix) is another possibility. That's what I run and it's the largest filter that fits on the h.o. engines.

I was actually surprised that such a great engine, not a small engine, either...but that it had such a short and stubby oil filter. I mean, it is squat and small in diameter, too. I mean, this great engine is being filtered by something that looks like it would be at home in a 4-cylinder GM EcoTec, I think that is the name of the Classic, Cobalt, Cavalier 4-bangers.

Yeah I've found the larger filter area makes a pretty big difference when it's cold. Over the winter I could see exactly when the bypass valve closed (opened?) and let oil through the filter itself. Much sooner than a smaller unit with a more restrictive media.
