we mainly use cb's as they're easier for everyone to be on the same channel.
but some will use other options WITH their cb's, like HAM, GMRS, FRS, and cellular 2-way (mic and 10-4), as well as some garmin gps have built in 2-ways.
but since there are so many variables, everyone generally keeps a cb in their rig. i use a cobra 29 wx classic.

we used to use cbs here but since there really isn't anything to do but run through the mud or sand, it was useless so everyone sold them. i could definitely see them being useful on a trail where you don't have eye contact with everyone in your group
