Default No recovery points..

I have no recovery points on my 1994 Cherokee Country. Buying them (very) soon naturally, but since I've got no recovery points at all and no tow package, what would be the safest place to wrap a tow strap around in the event that I did get stuck without my points in the next week or so??

Around the throat of the AAA guy who trys to make you pay for dragging the truck into the woods.

Wheeling with no recovery points is like having sex with an ugly chick. You're crazy, dumb, and desperate.

I know this, hence why I haven't wheeled in any terrain mentionable for lack of recovery points. So I don't really need a thirty post lesson about how you should have recovery points and learn about things before wheeling. But back to my actual question, If I did get stuck though, last resort, where would I wrap a tow strap?

I had someone tell me that the shackles of the rear leaf-springs can work as long as your not SUPER stuck. I was dubious. Anyone have any thoughts on that.

I've pulled cars out of ditches by the axles, but never anything really stuck.. I would just try to make sure you can distribute weight in 2 different spots on the axle so you're not just tugging on one set of parts if you do this.

and this-

and a couple of straps.

Under $200, less than a towing bill.

If something has NO tow points I always wrap a strap to both bumper brackets and then another from that to my vehicle. Never tug.try to be easy and pull out the way they came in. A bumper is miner compared to an axle pulled out and no vehicle attached to it. I've dun this several times in snow and a few in mud. Only bent 1 bumper so far. Knock on wood. And remember try not to tug.

if you have no recovery points, and you have a 30 foot strap available, you should do a "cruse loop" recovery.
a cruse loop is instructed by wreckmaster recovery and should be used all the time when recovering vehicles safely.
now i only use this method when out in the tow truck, but there's no reason why it couldn't be used for offroading.

what you want to do is pass the strap through the front doors and around the base of the front seats, then pass the strap around the rockers and between the wheels under the car. you only want to close the doors one click, leaving them slightly popped open to the safety latch. then attach a shackle to either another strap or winch cable and start pulling.

The frame rails have holes too I think. If he has a strap with hooks (not recommended, but if he wheels with no tow points he could also make the mistake of buying such a strap ) them he could hook eack hook to each "rail", create a "V" shape & pull from the point of the V. Of course, simply refraining from wheeling until he gets tow points is the real answer ...

there is holes, but you need the proper T hooks. i actually have a v strap with the T hooks that i keep in the jeep from my tow truck. you can hook a tug strap to that and still give a bit of a tug. but you need to know which holes are the reinforced factory recovery holes.

All of these ideas are good but each recovery is different. Stuck in a simple mud hole and using the bumper, axle and holes in frame might work. If your in nasty mud or caught on the back side of a rock then all those spots might just spell the end of your XJ. Search you tube and you will have your fill of bad recoveries.
Until you get your "baby" properly set up for what your wheeling in, I would pass up all the "look what I can do" situations.
It makes as much sense as inflating a tire by blowing into the valve stem.
Knowing your limits is vital for the safety of your rig, you and the those trying to recover you.
Not trying to sound mean or arrogant. Would hate to see some one lose a vehicle worth thousands over a part you could get by saving for a few months. Or worse....... get hurt

Absolutely to the last two posts; I haven't wheeled in my Jeep in anything but a few like one foot deep mud puddles, and driving in snowstorms over the winter when they happened. Never taken it anywhere and done even any "medium (?)" intensity wheeling because I have no recov. points. I think I'm gonna go to a JY and find some hooks and brackets off an XJ that had them from factory.

I appreciate all the replies. And no offense taken, I'd say the same thing to someone, don't wheel with no recovery points on the vehicle.

I did this a few years ago to help a friend out of a ditch, they still have my tow strap "attached" to their jeep
