New speakers or add an amp?

Yeah the old Rockford amps were great. If JL audio is out of the price range, Alpine makes very good stuff at reasonable prices as well.

Yup.

As far as speakers and amps go... my top choice is higher end Memphis Equipment.

JL comes in a close second.

Headunits:

Alpine
Kenwood
JVC

In that order.

Quote: It would be tricky finding a 4 channel amp that, when bridging two of the channels, puts out enough power for most subs for a reasonable price. If he wants to run rear speakers, this setup will not work depending on his hu. Some hus have amp cancellation and don't put anything out the speaker wires when you are sending the signal out the RCAs. He might be able to make it work with LOCs. If he wants one amp with a sub, I'd get a dedicated 3 or 5 channel amp.

A Kenwood Kac-8405 is $120 and can easily run his front speakers and a small sealed subwoofer. There are some cheap Sony amps that can do this also. I have yet to run into a receiver that automatically turns off speaker outputs when running RCAs. I know there are some, but I don't think it's common.

It's easy to say 'get a 5 channel amp a sub and new speakers' but the OP said he wanted a modest upgrade on a budget.

It's only 180wrms into 4ohms. You'd have to find a sub that was rated for 150wrms at 4ohms.

I stopped paying attention to RMS ratings a long time ago. 9 times out of 10 they're BS.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

Quote: First question is what's your budget? No budget, but I can't justify spending $400 for an amp when I could almost pick up 4 Treadright 31's for that. I'd like to spend maybe $200-$250 right now. Less would be better of course.

Do you plan to add a sub? Yes perhaps, in the future. I'll see how I like the sound once I buy an amp and maybe different speakers.

I'll check into the Alpine and less expensive JL audio amps and do some more digging.

I read that the amps I posted links to (the MB Quarts) are encased in plastic and not aluminum. Is that true?

Anymore suggestions for a reasonably priced (less than $150) amp that will fit under a seat. (front or back, doesn't matter)

And thanks again guys for your insight on this overdone topic.
