The very best way to identify a part that you're looking at but don't know the name of is to get a copy of the PARTS CATALOG. That will have detailed diagrams of pretty much everything on the XJ as well as a listing of the "official" name of the part and the Mopar part number.
Visit http://www.xjjeeps.com and see if your year is available there, if not, I'm sure it's out there somewhere.
Frequently, you can go to RockAuto.com and do a part number search using the Mopar part number and "Mopar" in the brand drop down menu and they will have a listing that isn't necessarily shown in the normal YMME search.
The parts catalog is also super helpful if you want to see how something is put together as the parts are generally pictured in an "exploded" view down to the individual fasteners.
They have it for 1996, thanks, will dowload when I get home.
The one I linked is for a 91-95 or at least listed as that. I've had both pre 97 and post 97 XJs and I can't remeber what the differences were between the two CCV systems.
Tip one: Go to Cruiser54 page http://cruiser54.com/ and do all the electrical suggestions he has (even though his are for slightly older Jeeps). You will need some dielectric grease and some Ox-Gard. Go through every electrical connector you can find, clean it, open it, put grease in the cylinders and lube the gasket, put back together. Ox-Guard is for all the ground connections an Cruiser54 has some tips for improving the grounds.
Same site, download the 1995 and 1995 XJ manuals. He doesn't have 1996, but 1996 was a transition year, so most of the stuff on it matches either 1995 or 1997 anyway.
If it has original lug nuts, replace those with solid 1/2" chrome lug nuts.
Happy commuting!
A lot, lol. I have 288k and climbing. Had 287k three weeks ago, I've put 1,300 on it since!
