New guy buying questions
Hello everybody.... new here obviously and I've got lots of questions and hopefully soon a new Cherokee too. I've never owned one before but have wanted one for quite a long time.
I'm going tonight to look at this:
http://poconos.craigslist.org/cto/1892505289.html
267,000 miles. Owner tells me it's solid underneath, only small areas of surface rust on the body, and runs great despite the miles. Also sounds like there are plenty of new parts on it.
I'd love to get some opinions and advice from the experts around here on what I should look for, any special concerns, and most importantly....should I be scared away by the mileage.
Thanks in advance for your help

He's a bit high on the price, IMO.
267k miles is a lot. I don't know of 'scared' is right, 'nervous' maybe. These engines can go for a ton of miles if taken care of, it's all going to depend on what kind of condition it's in.

It seems to be a good looking rig. But as stated before he is high on the price, even with the new parts.
I cant really tell from the picture, but it looks to be the base model. Personally I would probably start around 700 and try to end up right around 900. That would probably be what its really worth.
Things it does have going for it.
- HO 4.0
- AW4 auto
- 231 Tcase
- Probably HP non disco D30
- 2 door
Down sides
- HIGH Miles
- D35 Rear - Upgrade ASAP esp with that many miles
- with high miles things to be replaced
- Tie rod ends and Track bar
- Motor to be rebuilt soon
- Transmission service
- Ball Joints
- suspension
Good Luck tonight and hopefully you can get it at a good price.

Thanks for your replies guys....
Went to look at it last night. it was a mess. the new floors that the owner said he installed were just aluminum sheet layed over the totally rusted out floors and it didn't look too solid around the spring perches. The body had a quickie bondo and spray job and the interior was real rough. The good news was that the motor was quiet, had decent power, and it seemed to shift well desoite it's 260,000 miles.
The price that i thought would be fair was around $400-500. He was sticking at $1200.
SOOoooo....on the way home a spotted another Cherokee at a small used car dealer that specializes in cheap cars. It's a 89 Laredo with power everything. I couldn't see any rust anywhere underneath, interior looked great, cd player, 140,000 miles, paint was presentable, etc. Asking $1995. Does that sound like a "fair" price? I'm going back out to drive it tomorrow.

Still a little high. Look for a 92 or newer for less than 1500. Check out the county/state auctions sites for old fleet surplus XJs.
