New to Cherokees please help...
Hi everyone...
I've recently purchased a 1998 GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO I6 engine 4.0L engine with selec-track option...
Unfortunately, this is the first 4x4 car that I've owned (I'm saying unfortunately, because I love it and I regret that I never bought one before)
Well the problem is that nobody told me about the function of the selec-track option and I drove the car for a while on part time four wheel drive on dry pavement (now I know that I wasn't suppose to do that) And I've always used to switch from PT to FT four wheel drive by stepping on the brake and sliding the control lever down without paying attention to the position of the transmission and usually it was on drive while switching and then I've realized that the front end is jerking or it feels like there is something stuck under the wheels if I turn the wheels all the way to the left or right(i even tried to force the car to move under these curcumstances)
Now yesterday after reading the article on this site, I've learned about how the TC locks the front and rear differentials and i've also learned that i suppose to change from 2WD to FT4WD on the fly and i've acctualy tried that on dry pavement, first thing in the morning and the car switched smooth and fine and I've felt little jerking while taking sharp turns, but nothing like the past one...
Now after all this long story,my question is...
A- Do you think that I've caused permanent damage on the TC??
B- What's the best way to check if the TC and the complete system is working properly?
C- I'm thinking to service the transmission and the TC, what kind of ATF shall I use for the transmission and the TC??
And a last question, I have the check engine light on, and the code reads (P0455 LARGE EVAP LEAK) I have a mechanic friend who is not a JEEP expert, who smoke tested the system and told me that I have a crack on charcoal canister...
I have replaced the canister with brand new one,the car drove about 120 miles without the check engine light and then it came back with the same code...
Do you have any idea what it is? Or how can I solve this problem? As an extra hint, my friend checked the car again, but he couldn't find a leak...
In addition, the car does not starts from the first crank, I have to crank it twice or hit the gas to start the car, if it's sitting over an hour... Is this related with the EVAP leak? Or that's something totally different??
Thank you very much in advance and I really appreciate all the participant's efforts
Best regards
Leon

welcome to the forum
to put the tc in 4x4 u have to put the tranny in N to make it go smoothly
put automatic tranny fluid in th tc as well
u can check the tc if u go in a empty dirt lot and try it out and see how it goes
u cant run part time 4x4 on pavement, only full time
if the tc is ruined get a np242 which is what u have now,or u can swap a np 231 which is stronger offroad, but the np242 is fine

Re:
Thanks guys for the fast reply...
Regarding the EVAP, I've purchased a new gas cap and I still have the codes...
Any other ideas??
--------------------
Regarding the TC I've switched to FT4WD and drove on pavement, and it all went alright...
Do I still have to check it on dirt road??
And how it feels if it's broken??

There is also no need to purchase a used one, because they are all rusted...
So buy the new one and see what happens...
If the check engine code is P0445 large evap leak, it involves around dozen of components, best if you can do a smoke test...
If the code is P0442 small evap leak, it means the gas cap...
Good luck...
