Whe you have a stock xj and no money, you can do what I did, cut the fenders, cut and fold rear quarters, remove all the plastic trim crap, remove rear sways bar (use mounts as BPE), etc. if u want to weld, try things like replacing rusty floored boards, alternator relocation, or making a tool box for the rear cargo area side, and other little things. Here's the box I made.

start by fixing all the broken stuff, all the fluids, tune up, and then whatever your heart desires.

In all seriousness...what you need to be doing, first and foremost, is making sure ALL PM items are up-to-date...tune up, all fluids changed, rubber replaced, driveline inspection, and you get the gist...get it in primo running condition first.

Sounds like you're having electrical issues. Do yourself a favor, and go to
http://www.pacificcoastmanuals.com/
and download a copy of your year XJ. It has EVERYTHING you could want to know in there, and then some. Best $8 you'll spend on your ride. So, make sure it's in good running condish, then start tackling the other issues, like electrical...

Then, once you have a good running, street legal XJ, you need to ask yourself some questions...like what do you want it to do? Daily driver? Then leave it alone. Mild offroad? Again, leave it alone. Wanna hit some decent trails? Like maybe say, 60% on, and 40% offroad? Mild lift. Hardcore rockcrawling? Bust out your wallet.

A lot of this will depend on your terrain nearby.

Best advice I can give you...one step at a time. Take your time, do it right. Have questions? Post 'em up. Tackle things one at a time. Prioritize. Take your biggest issue and focus on getting it right.

Welcome to the sickness.
