A person here at work has a 92 Cherokee Laredo for sale for $1000. It has 196,000 miles on it. He has clear title and says he has service records. He is the first owner. The vehicle looks pretty good - straight body, good interior, rust free. But it has a bad neutral safety switch, which looks to me to be about a $400 repair (at a dealer), or ~ $150 for the switch and my labor. Do you think it is worth buying, and how much would you offer the person for it? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a pretty good deal and you can rebuild the neutral safety switch for free. Takes about 10 minutes and good as new.

Trade in value in this condition is less than $700. What I worry about is the high mileage. Will the 4.0 engine go well pass 200,000? I'm thinking about $500 cash. He feels the repair will be about $300, and he needs it towed away.

You always take a chance buying a high-mileage vehicle but driving it can usually help you make an educated guess on it's true condition. I'm guessing from your statement that "He wants it towed", that it won't start so can't be driven. You have no way of knowing the condition of the drivetrain if that's the case. JMO
