My XJ does that too, and so did the TJ i test drove before i bought the XJ. I think i remember reading/ hearing that Jeep did that on purpose so if you're offroad, the keys don't rattle, and hit the steering column. Could be wrong though.

My key worked on my ex's XJ...hers was the same year so I imagine that had something to do with it. It was fun to mess around that way, funny too.

Don't feel bad, my pick up key worked in the door of my wife's XJ. Those older GM columns start to wear, and then just about any Chevy key will work for your ignition key.

Borrowed my parents Maxima a year ago. Got stolen in broad daylight. Found a week later with no sign of forced entry. Empty gas tank, stereo faceplate gone (too stupid to figure out how to remove the whole thing?) they took the stock jack(bought a replacement for $5).

all crown vics (police package at least) have the same key. my town had an auction, sold some old cop cars, and didnt change the keys, so everyone who bought one can get into the others, and most of our police fleet..... arnt we smart?

Did not expect to hear about all these it seems way to easy for somebody to just try their key in another car and steal everything. I always thought that they made different keys and locks for every car.

The reality is that there are only several hundred different keys for each model. They are numbered. They try to spread them out etc. But somewhere your key will fit lots of other XJs, and and not a few Chevys too.

Same here, I didn't think it was so easy to open other vehicles with the same key. I hope not many people know this

I hate it. My mom borrowed my XJ to go to the store and called me later asking me if my XJ's keys were on the house. She had gone all the way to the store using her van's key.

I have seen a 91 Cherokee key used to open the door of a Chevy Cavalier.
