The only things I ever come across are burnt up furniture or vehicles.

Wow, that's interesting.

Was it maybe a family graveyard? Like were all the last names the same or something like that?

i would have got out of my jeep and started running around reading all the head stones. old graveyards fascinate me, especially ones that seem like they are deserted. in MI, here, if you know where to look, you can find grave yards like this all over the state. there is one like this right by my house. it's up-kept, though, but the plot of land it is one is not large enough even to build a house on, and it's located right behind a corner supermarket/shopping complex. some of the dates on the stones read late 1700'sup to early 1900. then about 2 miles down the road, there is another one that is on a street corner and has some stones read even earlier dates, and they all are french names. being north of detroit, i want to know if there was some french fur trading post or something that was located int he area.

Yesterday afternoon I head up a trail near my new home here, hoping to explore and see what was around. It's clearly not an oft-used trail, as the snow didn't even have tire-marks in it. I went about two miles out into the woods, and found an old, beaten down shack. It was obviously derelict; the windows were all broken, the door was broken, it clearly hadn't been used in a long, long time.

But there was a 2010 US Census envelope on the door. WTF? Being that there were no tire marks, they had to have walked out there to put it on the door. Creep-city.

I kept going a little ways, and came across a small house. Again, it was obviously derelict, since the windows were broken, the yard and parking area were overgrown, the roof was starting to cave in. But there were three kettle grills out in the front yard, shiny and new. No one was around. The trail kept going, but I elected to turn around and get the hell out of there, since I wasn't packing and I didn't want to have a Ned Beatty Deliverance scenario happen. I most certainly will NOT squeal like a piggy.

That's the woods of New England for you; lots of lore and old folk tales, compounded by the fact that they can be reallllllly creepy sometimes..

Croydon NH, the town I grew up in, has a population of only 600 people...but we've got 9 graveyards scattered around town. 6 of them are accessible by normal means, but three of them are wayyyy out in the middle of the woods, accessible only by foot, and one of those is in Corbin Park, at the foot of Croydon Mountain. The town maintains that one, and it's closed to the public.

Putnam Cemetary, the second oldest, has graves dating back to the mid-1600's. The town has been there since 1620, so it's not surprising. But, it's still pretty cool and a little bit creepy.
