Question Modern/Current XJ Replacement?

Does there exist on the market a new equivalent replacement for the Cherokee?

I see Jeep has the Compass/Patriot which appear to be identical vehicles with different bodies? Neither appear to be off road worthy. The Liberty? Grand Cherokee? Other?

If not by Jeep, another brand?

I just like my Cherokee, maybe because it is so crude.

Nah, the Cherokee is pretty iconic. There's no way to replace it.

According to jeep, the Liberty (called the Cherokee all over the word except the US) is the new cherokee.

According to Chryslerized Jeep, that is.

I'm sure the founders of Jeep are rolling in their graves right now. (If they're even dead?)

I would say the Commander is the closest model to a new xj

IMO, the only new vehicle that's even a close comparison to an XJ is the JK. Solid front and rear axles, 2 or 4 door, capable off road, good on road, and if you get a Rubicon, you would have one of the most capable 4x4s currently made. Definitely the only new Jeep I would even consider, I'd be happy with a 2 door JK Rubicon with a manual tranny.
Granted, its not a replacement for the Cherokee, and looks nothing like a Cherokee, but I think its the only thing in Jeeps current lineup that's worth comparing to an XJ.

^x2, agree 100%, the new jeeps are sell outs except for the KJ. They are focusing on the SUV soccer moms instead of its heritage & what jeep is known for. Sad!

I wouldn't touch anything after 01 XJ/98 ZJ/06 TJ. Jeep is dead as far as I'm concerned. Even if you can get past how horrible Wranglers look now, they've still got horrible motors ruined even further by stringent modern emissions standards, not to mention the built in nanny safety features.

Commanders are cool..I like mine. But they are still ifs.

The jk and jku are pretty decent but it's still a wrangler..can't really be compared to a cherokee. What we know as a cherokee is done...I don't see it coming back in a way we would approve of.

I wonder if that's the "Coffin"? One Jeep I've seen in the last few years always reminded me of a coffin on wheels.

The Pentastar motor isn't too terrible.

Mk2 Discovery, but I'd still rather have an XJ.

Not discounting your opinion, just curious if you've actually driven on one for a while.
