That's an N54, and it would be completely and utterly wasted in your Jeep, not to mention grossly cost-prohibitive and a nightmare to integrate into your 1988 system.
Sorry, but I seriously hope you're joking.

I don't have any problems concerning the integration, we've done much more complicated things in the shop. Elecrtonics has no secrets for me.
Cost is relative, the engine itself is probably the largest expense.

Installing an engine like that goes far beyond setting up a standalone ECU. There's a multitude of sensors they use that will simply cause the engine to not work if they're not properly hooked up and calibrated.
All the more power to you if it's something you want to pursue, but prepare for a long, hard road ahead of you. It may be worth it to befriend some people on BMW forums for more info, but don't be surprised if they bash you for the idea.
And yes...brand new, those engines are ridiculously expensive, and finding a crashed 3-series in a junkyard is almost impossible. You may be better served going with one of the M50/M52 engines from the E36 3-series. They're much, much more available, far cheaper, and a cinch to install. You'll also get good power and torque out of them with relatively few mods.

INDEED!!!
How would you go about bolting it up to the AW4?!?! Thats my only concern...
But, Honestly I would have to agree with Hal and go with an S50B30 engine from a '95 M3. Its 3.0ltrs makes plenty of torque, is OBDI (huge plus IMO) and has a HUGE aftermarket...because lets face it...youre gonna need torque at both low and high end, and any M50B25 from a 325, just aint gonna cut it for torque. You could also go with a M50B28 from a 328, which has them same amount of HP as the 325, but it has more torque because of its bigger displacement.
Here the American specs on the S50B30 from a '95 M3
S50B30 = 240 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 225 lb/ft of torque @ 4,250 rpm.
Hopefully, you understand, that this is an engine built for racing, and its going to make ALL ITS POWER in the TOP RPM range...Where for offroading you need power DOWN LOW.
Its an interesting idea.....but its COMPLETELY ASININE, when you consider the application and real world use of said vehicle...
In other words... A Complete Waste of Money & Time.
But thats just my opinion.

Actually the only problem for me now is to find the engine.

Why dont you just get an M67 ...its a V8 ...its diesel, and makes 329hp and a WHOPPING 552 ft lbs!!!
Since youre entirely set on blowing money.
...Or if you wanted to go smaller, you could put in a N47, its BMW's current 4cyl diesel making 204hp and 295ftlbs

I driven just about every honda out there thanks to work. And I don't like them rice burner's period. Everybody talks how they are sooooo fast. I think thats BS because I even put around 40 mile on a brand new SI and it still feels like a rice burning SLUG. Anything a honda can do my Jeep can do BETTER.

I have never driven anything smaller than a Jeep cherokee. I cant say if I like little cars or not but I LOVE my cherokee. It may not be the fastest or the strongest but its a good mix and a blast to drive being a manual.

woot for the bmws, I've owned a 78' 530, and 2 94 530's. they run very well and reliable, when there not having some stupid sensor problem or overheating....... But I still would never go without at least one bmw in my car collection. I'm waiting for the right e34 540i/6 speed to come around
I've had the engine in my new 530 for 27K, 127k total miles, and just now had to replace the radiator, water pump, deleted the clutch fan with an electric fan, o2 sensors, and had a bad running problem which turned out to be a water temp sensor for the ecu. No biggy.
BMW FTW!
But the jeep does to to be reliable, tough and easy to work on.
And I respect hondas as a good reliable family or just get around town car, but any 4x4ing they are NOT. And I hate them because of THE MANY MANY MANY KIDS around here driving riced out pos hondas thinking there so badass even when the jeep could beat them. Hell I beat several riced out hondas in my 2.0 NA eclipse which was slow as hell. And the bmw just eats them. I've only been beat by 1 honda and that was a 96 hatchback was clean jdm body and all parts, b18b 18psi tubo, all kinds of crap, that thing was a little rocket.

I helped a guy who's Ford Ranger was stuck in some rocks. I hooked up a tow rope and told him to let some air out of the tires and had a guy helping push, pulled him right out.
Oh, forgot to mention I was on my Can Am Outlander 800 4X4 ATV!
Who cares who thinks this or that is more macho or manly, we ALL know that the Cherokee is a much more capable off road vehicle then most of the competition out there. As much "stuff" as they've put in these things they are still a Jeep and IMO are still engineered for off road use.
