Starting to be some unnecessary hostility brewing in this thread. Like I said in my post on page 1, the Hondas are great vehicles when used for what they were built for: saving money on gas and getting groceries. I would never consider a Honda for offroad use. Conversely, our Cherokees are incredibly capable offroad vehicles, but I know that if I've got a long trip to take, their comfort and fuel efficiency will take a back seat to my girlfriend's Civic.
I'll say it again: you guys are comparing apples to oranges. I can see this sort of argument between a Ford/Chevy/Dodge 4x4 and the Cherokee, but a fuel-efficient 4-banger? You can't compare them at all.
The H3's have veered far off the 4x4 track, unfortunately. They're simply way too large and heavy to do any sort of serious offroad venturing. There's one that visits the local hardware store all the time...chromed out, offroad lights covering every available surface, nerf bars, roof rack, etc. It's pretty obvious it's never been offroad before, and even if it did, it would get stuck in a New York Minute. It's a shame Hummer has strayed so far from their offroad roots...

my favorite honda was a 76 honda accord i owned in 93. that sucker was so much fun. my 89 was ok too but that sucker was expensive when it broke, which was enough for me to get rid of it.all our jeeps, except the one a lady totalled for us and the liberty, have gone over 200k miles with only the basic maintenance items. same as my little 76 honda, not the 89 civic though.
you guys want a fuel efficient xj, get a four cylinder from the late 90s. those suckers get super mileage and still are fun to drive (if its a standard).
i had to pull my buddies 52 or 53 ****** out when we went in the mud. then he pulled me out later. i have street tires though so i knew i was going to get stuck. i figured it would be in the mud but it wasn't, it was on the weird grassy water area where everywhere you drove, the grass would get laid down and then the trail would fill up with water. it was like being on ice so when i went over a little hilly thing, i couldn't pull the back end over because the tires were spinning. didn't get stuck in any mud but the dang wet grass hilly thing got me.
after the 89 honda, i will not own another one. the same reliability plus a better looking car is had with a bmw. plus, parts are cheaper and people watch out with their doors a little more when they are next to bmw. an 80s to early 90s 3 series can be had for a few hundred dollars and last to way over 500k miles with basic maintenance. my 89 325i got sold for 1k more then i bought it with 350k miles, my 86 325e got sold for 1100 more then i paid with 2xxk miles, my 84 got sold for 1500 more and who knows how many miles it had. my 88 735i got sold for 800 more then i paid and it had almost 400k miles on it. all these car and the most expensive was the 89 325 which cost my 1500 bucks.
my black 91 318i mtech model cost me 1200 bucks and it has a little over 225k miles on it.

1.8 liters and almost the same hp as we get out of 4 liters. almost 35mpg on the highway though and almost 30 in town

Ok short story I should tell, my friends always make fun of my horrible fuel mileage in my truck, its a 2007 dodge ram 1500 sport 4x4 crew cab with BFG a/t's on it, but about a month ago with the olympics here, we decided to check it out, its like a 2 hour drive away, so we looked for a place with cheap parking and decided to park there (2 dollars everywhere else 15) but there was no parking spots, I find a nice curb park on it throw a parking pay ticket on the dash, and leave, my friends drive 3 blocks away park at another place pay the 15 bucks for parking.
Anyways they make fun of me telling me I am going to get a ticket and other crap, because this parking ticket dude is walking around my truck, so 7 hours pass and I go back to my truck, I jump in (half a minute away) while my friends walk almost 30 minutes away, I got no ticket, and I will never purchase a vehicle that cannot park on a curb.
