The 390 did have a bit more ponies but is considered a boat anchor by most Ford guys. If you research it you'll find there isn't much aftermarket support for it either.

You'll see a lot of 390's used as gasoline generators. A local college had one in every building until they upgraded to Cummins diesel generators. I didn't know they used them as such until I saw it.

That's interesting... I thought there'd be a bigger power difference. 91 and newer 4.0's push 190 horsepower, and 235 foot pounds of torque. and I believe the 390's bell housing bolt pattern was different than most ford engines.

hhmm... that would be my luck with different bolt patterns... lol... they did something in 73 and up 390's cause 67 to 72 they had 60 more horsepower... which is weird... id like to know what they changed in 73 to drop so much dang HP... that 390 should push more HP then the darn inline six too... not sure whats up there... that means the 460 is the only ford engine from thoughs years that really is a jump in HP from the inline 6... i find that hard to believe... something aint right... lol

From '67, (until '71 I think), the 390 was available in the Mustang GT's.
It's part of the FE engine family that includes the 406, the 427, the 427 SOHC, the 428, and the 428 Cobra Jet.

In those years they lowered the HP ratings because of the insurance co.'s rates. Plus the compression ratio was lowered so they could run on regular, then unleaded gas. And the numbers were checked at the rear wheels at a lower RPM than the previous tests which were tested at the flywheel at the max power RPM level.JMO

correct... i read a forum that said all this... says you can swap the 428 heads, crank and intake and it makes it a 410 and its got killer power in that form... says the biggest killer is th heads like most fords... its buildable... there parts out there for it... question now is how will it fit... lol

makes sence... i read somewhere someone saying they got HP readings alittle different on the earlier models.. figured this is how...
but all the mustang guys said with a set of heads and normal upgrades they will burn through 1st and second easily...

for what it's worth, 390's are supposed to be torquey sombishes.

i had a 352 in a 63 Galaxie that i wish i would have hung onto, but i let it go when i scrapped the car.
