It should be rather obvious that I'm new to the forums, but I come here as a humble student in the ways of the jeep. The wife and I both have cars and after getting married, moving into a house in the country, I want something a bit more rugged. I've always loved jeeps and I feel now is the time!

There are a couple for sale locally where I live and I was hoping to get a few opinions on them or maybe I should stay away from all of them?

The first one and 3rd one are the ones i would get..

 

I was leaning towards the 3rd one myself but was afraid of the headliner issue. After some research it appears they aren't near the pain I figured it would be to repair it. Thanks for the input

Carfax / autocheck is your friend. Given the age of these vehicles there are guaranteed issues with some more $$$$ than others, you have to set the limit going in or it will eat you to death. i.e. replacement of the $65 heater core requires the complete removal of the dash, they forgot to mention that part.

With this in mind if

1. You are mechanically competent.

2. You don't mind loosing all the skin off the back of your hands.

Take your pick.

 

The third one has a rebuilt engine. You never know who rebuilt it, if they cut any corners, etc. Seeing people sell their car only 3k after a full rebuild worries me. They supposedly just dumped a bunch of money in it only to get rid of it?

The second one would be at least worth checking out and possibly using the heater core as a bargaining tool if you have the tools to replace it.

The first one is a grand cherokee. They are upscale versions of the cherokee and have differences, I'm not really too fond of them myself, but you may as well check it out if you are into that kind of thing. To me they seem more of a street vehicle than an offroad vehicle like the cherokee. The ride is smoother, they are heavier, the body doesn't "seem" as rugged.

 

I was going to press for more information on the rebuilt one: 1) why sellling? 2)who did the work? . I know a lot of the shops around here so that might would put my mind at ease depending on who did it. Benefits of living in a small town.

The second Jeep's owner assured me their price was merely asking, and they were more than willing to come down on the price to get the heater core fixed. As I learned, its more labor than anything.

I listed the Orvis as it was a bit more luxurious and may be better of two worlds off road and only 130k miles, might not be as much of a money sink as the other two?
