I want to replace all 4 of my door speakers in my 87 Cherokee. I like the Sony Xplods. My 91 has them. However, one thing that I don't really like about my old speakers in the 87 is that they tend to distort when I crank the volume way up. I'm not really looking for speakers that will handle a ton of bass (that's what my sub is for). I'm not too savvy on wattages and things like that. Can you guys give me a reccomendation on some good solid 5.25" round speakers that will handle some volume?

Rockford Fosgate. got 6.5" in the box with my 12" sub thats in the trunk of my Lumina. they sound pretty good to me and werent too expensive lol
I have rockford's in my ram right now with 2 seperate tweeters (hole saw made my own mounting locations) love them! they keep up with my polk sub no problem. I have run infinities in the past and love those but they can be alittle pricey depending what model you get. The RMS power is what I pay more attention to since it is what it is playing at more often then peak.(although peak is important too). Alot of sound is personnal choice. Go to a best buy or a car stereo shop that has it all mounted up and play the crap out of them and find what you like. You can also see what amp they are running everything from too.

Man you've come to the right place with this question! lol
I'm an installation technican for a car audio/tint shop and I install speakers all day.
Currently I'm running 4 Kenwood 5 1/4s, 4 Dual tweeters (they light up to the beat of the music which is B.A.), an Alpine head unit, 2 rockford fosgate P1 12s, and an mtx amp.
The Kenwoods I got for only $30 a set (and they come with speaker grilles and everything)
They are 160 watts MAX power, and 40 watts RMS (which is their normal power handling). They work well in all kinds of music and can be cranked loud without sacrificing any clarity. Most speakers are a lot less powerful than these which was why I bought them. The higher the wattage, the clearer and louder they'll usually be. The next reason why they are good speakers is because they have tons of bass for their size. They are one way speakers which means they don't have the little tweeter thing built into them. One way speakers always have more bass. To boost clarity (even though these things are already clear as is) build a component speaker system. That means you'll need to buy tweeters. Install the tweeters and the kenwoods and you'll have a loud, clear system that you'll be able to crank way loud without distortion.
Another thing I want to add is sound also depends on your head unit. You can have the cheapest walmart head unit paired with the world's best speakers and it will end up sounding horrible. The better/more expensive your head unit is, the better sound it will produce. Alpines are known to have awesome sound processors which is the reason why I went with them. Also, a contributing factor to good sound is how powerful your headunit's pre-amp is. If the pre amp wattage is low, you can pretty much expect the sound to be fuzzy and distorted at high volumes.
That's my lesson in car audio for today... class is dismissed. Hahahaha
Oh by the way,
If you're willing to throw a little more cash at some speakers, I suggest checking out a company called Vibe Audio. They aren't very well known in the general public but they are some of the best speakers out there. There's a component system going for $90 a set and they are worth every penny. They come with the 2 5 1/4s, tweeters, and a midbass module. I'm getting them once I get enough money to blow lol.
To get better deals on speakers and whatnot try
Sonicelectronix.com. I buy all my stuff from there and they're prices are lower than if I were to buy anything from my boss (which is with my employee discount... sad right?). Give them a try, see if you find anything you like man. Good luck!

I have two 5 1/4's (three way, full range) in the front doors, two 6x9's (three way, full range) in the rear hatch, One 10" sub in the rear pocket. All Rockford Fosgates. A 5 channel 1400 watt amp, under the rear seat. Givng me 250 watts to each corner speaker, and 400 watts going to the sub. Sound like a concert hall, and some sereous volume, if I want too. But the head unit I used is a Pioneer premier DPH- 90HHD. It's ten years old now, and still worth $450-$500. In 1990 when it came out, It listed for $1800. It controls every thing, freg.'s to each speaker, time delay, Car type it's in. It's actually a sound prossesor, And has a built in Hard drive, that holds 160 hrs. of music. Any CD played in it, will be recorded to the hard drive, and stored. All looks like factory install, I painted the speaker grills to match the interior carpet. You cann't tell any of it is there, by looking in the windows. Don't want to temp would be theives. It did take me two days to install it. One day to run all the wire, next day to mount the hardware. Put well worth it.

Hey thank you very much 1996XJSport! That is more of a detailed answer than I expected. But much appreciated.
I will give that site a look and see what I can find.
