Default Looking to buy a Cherokee - Low budget..

Hey guys,

I've been recently looking into buying a Jeep Cherokee of some sort. I ride a motorcycle every day, and although it is GREAT fun, I do often hate the fact that I have to ride in the rain.. and very often, since I live in south Florida. I've been riding for the last 4 1/2 years, and I think its time to get another vechicle.

So, with that said.. I'm looking at buying a Jeep Cherokee. What I need help with is finding one.

I'm not looking to do anything crazy with it. I just want a RELIABLE source of transportation, and something to haul around my dogs in, and possibly go camping every now and then. I have an English Mastiff and a Boxer.

But yeah, so which model years should I be looking at? I'd like to spend as little as possible obviously, but I'd like to keep it under $2400-ish. My brother in law has an early 90's cherokee that I LOVE, which is the reason why I want to find one. These Jeep parts availability seems to be PLENTIFUL, which is another reason why I'd like to get one. It may very well become a hobby along with my motorcycle fascination.

Any suggestions or advice would be GREATLY appreciated. What models to stay away from, or what models I should strongly be considering, ect ect.. anything will help!

Thanks,
Adrian

Correct me if I'm wrong, this is just what I believe to be true (From my reading here)

Most people will recommend the 96 or 97. Those were the most reliable. The newer models have head cracking problems. And certain parts on the 96/97 are 'older style" Thus making them cheaper. However some people will argue that the cracked heads don't happen often enough to worry about it.

I'm sure you already know this, but make sure to check over the Jeep front to back, top to bottom. Check for fluid leaks/discoloration, make sure theres no funny noises, vibrations, anything like that. The tranny should shift smooth. etc

Thanks so much for the help. I've looked at a couple 96's and they seem to be really nice! Just going to take my time and wait for the right one to come up though.

Anyway, appreciate the help!

compare the pre 96 interior and the post 97 interior and choose off that. the rest of the years are all very similar w/exception to post '00 which has the head problems.

92+ (i think) has the HO - high output motor. Well worth it.
