Looking at a 96 Cherokee Country
Hello all,
From my screen name you can see I am new to the jeep thing. I have always wanted one, but only recently decided to go for it. I am currently looking at a 96 Cherokee Country 4x4. It has the 4.0 with auto transmission. It has 123k on it. It has never been wrecked and is all stock. I trust the dealer who is selling it because I have bought two other cars there before, but they usually only sell 2-3 year old cars. They called me and told me they got it in on a trade, because he knew I was looking. They were asking $3,200 and I got them down to $2,500 which I think is a good deal, but wanted to see what real jeep people think.
I also know the the engines in them are awesome, but have seen online about a lot of tranny problems. How long do they typically last if it was driven as a DD by a decent driver. It never hauled or pulled anything and hardly ever used the 4wd. They put it on a lift for me and I see there is no rust on the floor boards, just a little surface on the bottom edges under the front doors. What other things should I be ready to replace with this? I am going to keep it stock for about six months, and then put a 3" lift with 33"s.
Thanks for all your advice
Jason

Sounds like a solid jeep as far as the tranny problems go lots of XJ's have problems shifting into gear. Try putting it into drive and see if the learches forward it should give a sign. Other than that 2,500 isnt bad and if you trust the dealer i say go for it.

I dont recall that happening when I test drove it. I think i would remember that becuase my falcon did that but it was just idled to high. It would be a rough jump right? It seemed to shift smooth while driving, but then again i am used to cars and never had a jeep or truck so this is all new. I will test drive again to make sure.
Thanks.
Thanks.

yea, sounds like a good deal to me...i know if it hasnt been wheeled, there really wouldnt be to many things to look for...
for example, i just bought a 93 from a friend with 205k miles, and he has had it since 03, and i know its never been offroad a day in its life....
well, it now needs its first drivers side wheel bearing...and when i got it, i replaced both rear drive shaft u-joints bc they were the original and needed replaced bad...lol
but my point is, if its been on the road its whole life, itll be a while before things start needing replaced....generally, radiators will need replaced at about 190K-200K...
so yea, id say go for it...sounds good to me

Go ahead and buy it.
I have a 96 Cherokee that I bought new. It has the four cylinder and manual transmission. It has gone 270,000 miles as a daily driver and has given me no trouble at all. The 96 Cherokee is a tough, solid vehicle. I doubt you will be disappointed.
