Itll be fine, yes there is more clearance, but I know plenty of XJs out there that have run LPs. Usually because thats what they find. Are they as good? no, but they will still do an exceptional job locked, Look at TJs and LJs, both have LPs and both are vary capable.

I wouldn't put a locker in a LP because the way the ring and pinion contact each other is weaker than the HP. There is already plenty of horror stories of people taking out ring gear teeth on HP's. I would hate to see you spend all the money to have the locker set up then completely take out the ring and pinion like a year later.
I think the sensible thing to do would to find a HP to swap in. Try to find one that is not vacuum disconnect and has the bigger u joints (I think 95-99 but you should double check that).
That would be good too because then you could work on that axle while the LP is still under the jeep. Great time for new ball joints, bushings and seals.

Yeah if your gonna gear it and do more work do it to a HP, but if your just putting a lunch box locker in, itll be fine, then you can just swap it into the HP
