Dont let the people who tell you lunchbox lockers are death in the snow sway your mind either.

Just like anything else, don't drive like an idiot until you learn how your rig handles with the new modification.

You read far more into a post than what is actually there.

For the OP,
Can you use a lunchbox locker in a front axle that will be driven on snow or ice?
Sure you can.
Will it pefrom the same as a 100% open axle in the same conditions?
Of course not.

Duh.

Just thought the reccomendation for someone looking for the best bang for their buck locker being a $700+ selectable plus the cost of the air compressor and tank/ cable plus cost of installation in an otherwise stock axle was a bit much even if they do drive in the snow for who knows what fraction of the year.

Can you install a 4.5" lift on an xj with 33" tires?
Sure
Will it take handle on the streetlike a 100% stock xj?
No.

But ya dont go around telling people to keep their rig stock.

I have run lockrites Aussies and Spartans in a few of my rigs out of the lunchbox lockers I like the spartan the best. The pins are huge . Once I regear I will be going with a eaton e locker up front and a Detroit in the rear

So far I like the spartan I have in the front. Would not want it in the rear. I will be getting a selectable locker or truetrac for the rear.

Had a good comparison this weekend off roading. A yota with a locker in the rear was with our group. And a tj with a locker in the rear. Everyone else was fully locked except me. I have a lunchbox in the front. And both the trucks had 35's while I was only 32" tires.

On every tough climb or ledge, even boulder beds my front locker noticeably out wheeled the rear locker equiped trucks.

just an observation. Whats strange is everyone usually puts a locker in the rear first. Have not figured out why yet?

It's not the locker that causes the shafts to break, it's the weak tubes flexing where they enter the housing. This is one of the primary reason we refer to building up a Dana 35 as Polishing a Turd.
No matter how good you make it look, it's still a turd.

not to get too side tracked here but what is a good step towards preventing this with a D30? sleeves and truss?

I got an aussie and like it. reason being it's cheaper than a spartan and I've heard about issues with the lockrites lately

Truss, sleeve , brace the knuckles , but your axle shafts and carrier are the weak link upgrade them. With some chromoly shafts and a full case locker and good u joints then your r&p are the weak link but for all than money you could have built a junkyard d60
