I've done it before, well not in an XJ but.... AND I am about to do it again. I will be essentially living out of my Jeep for June / July this summer. BUT I'll have the XJ and my YJ and really be camping at a nearby lake when in town for work..lol
I plan to take a few long road trips during that time CO,UT,NM, etc
Cam needs to join in on this, he was the kid who lived in his much like you are describing for a few months.

I doubt I could do it. Really would like to for a few days just to say I have done it though, probably more of a fall activity rather than summer.

I don't know about living in a Cherokee, having a choice and having to do it are two different ballparks. Choose wisely, it can get pretty hot in a vehicle during the summer. Either way, good luck and I hope things go well for you, keep us updated.

I have done this a LOT in my lifetime. Just put yourself in the frame of mind that you are a trucker with a sleeper. This is their lifestyle as a norm and if they can do it anyone can. And this lifestyle is indeed camping whether you want to call it that or not.

I'm on week 4..... but wrapping things up after this week I think. As to the "isn't it hot in the XJ"... I don't actually sleep in it,(in fact my XJ is gone since 2 weeks ago, only have the 2 YJ's now) lol Usually either in a hammock or my big Yurt tent if I am somewhere I'll be for a few days. Its been a fun few weeks but time to go home.

I've slept in the back of my Cherokee overnight several times. I've camped in it.. I've used my Cherokee as a cheap alternative for motel rooms on trips. And, I even huddled in the back of that XJ.. tucked back up in a canyon I found in desperate haste, waiting out a howling sandstorm in the desert out beyond Barstow, California. THAT was an interesting night. The XJ rocked and bounced on it's springs and leaves as it was pummeled by heavy, sand-choked winds.. and we were up in a canyon. Out of the worst of the sandstorm.
I also spent a full year living in a little vintage 14' Oasis travel trailer with no bathroom up here in Washington state. Just me.. the trailer, and my Cherokee. And honestly. If were a single man. And if the trailer had a little bathroom? yah.. I could see living out my life like that.
But, I wouldn't recommend deliberately choosing to live that way for any long stretch of time.
It would be a lonely life. And you wouldn't be able to be a "builder".. a "creator". No room for a lathe, or a sanding bench, or a bench drill-press or even a simple table saw. No where to keep your air compressor and engine hoist.
Look them up on Google. I think they call it "urban camping?".. or something like that.
To be a man of means.. to have the freedom to do what you want. You need a base.. a home.. a place to keep a garage. Even better if you can find a pretty lady to run and love the attached house.. and you too.
Still, my Cherokee DOES fit rule #1 of my criteria for being an exceptional vehicle. And that is.. "Can I sleep overnight in the back should the occasional need arise."
Also, people who choose to live such lifestyles generally don't go for the Cherokee. One popular method is to buy a used, generic delivery panel truck. We've all seen them... and ignored them. That's the whole idea. You can turn the inside of a generic, box truck park into a nice living space. With a loft bed, tv, couches, fridge and kitchen.. even a bathroom. And you can park that truck just about anywhere in the city and no one notices it.
When was the last time YOU paid special attention to a random box truck, parked on the side of the street?
Yah.. just about no one notices them. And some of them are actually, disguised homes. heh.

Hope you're short. Every time I've slept in the back on a Cherokee, I've had to sleep diagonal and I'm 5'7". These things are compact SUVs after all. If I were to turn any Jeep into a mobile home, I'd buy the cheapest Hemi Commander I could find.
