Well I didn't add anything to my oil when I changed it as I have heard some not so great stuff about that. Have you ever put Lucas oil fuel injector cleaner in you gas tank though? You can buy it at any auto store and it goes right into you gas tank. It will clean out your injectors for a better spray pattern and get rid of some of that carbon build up in your jeep

well im planning on doing a syn-blend, not a full synth (not married to that plan)

however, if anyone knows of a good oil for extended drain intervals, let me know.

im not planning on buying the oil and filter until tomorrow, so i got a bit of time.

I know Amsoil and Royal Purple offer extended drain oils but they are full synthetic. Castrol Edge might be as well but it is also full synthetic.

found out the previous owner had conventional 10w-40 in it

so im definately not gonna go full synth....but i might still use a blend, and i will use 10w-30, since its gonna be warming up soon.

im hoping this oil change and new filter (the one on there now is undersized) will fix my oil issue.

the issue is that when i stop at a light, the oil pressure drops from its moving level (30-40) down to 10 or below.....a few times it seemed to drop completely.

according to a guy telling me about the issue, if the oil change and new filter dont work, my next move is to replace the sending unit.

Replace it anyway, mine did the exact same thing and I replaced it and now it's all better. It's only 30 dollars at napa and is an easy fix

20 bucks. I get free valvoline oil filters. I've only put 10,000 miles on it since I got it 3 1/2 years ago. I don't drive it much.

I dont really mind spending an extra 5 bucks on a filter if it really will work better.

also, this is my first oil change (in general and on the jeep)
is there any additive i should add to get rid of any sludge/other buildups that previous owners may have caused?

I would recommend a 5w-20 Synthetic. I personally only use RP, because in my opinion its the best and until I stop caring about using the best I will stick with it. BUT what I may want or think may not be what you want. You can grab the Oil Change Special @ Advance Auto Parts right now for Mobil 1 full synthetic (5 quarts) and a Mobil 1 Oil Filter (recommend oversized Part#: M1-301 for the newer-end Cherokee) @ $32.99 total!! That's not a bad deal if you don't care about the brand and want a HIGH Quality Full Synthetic.

If you want to check out some TRUE FACTS on oil I would suggest checking these VOA's(Virgin Oil Analysis) out and seeing how these oils really compare when you look at what they are made up of. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...oard=11&page=1

Synthetic Vs Dino is a pretty lopsided argument. Synthetic is going to be superior in all categories. The biggest and most important factor I think, is that the Synthetic is not going to thicken as much when it cools down.*(I can provide references for this on Bobistheoilguy if anyone cares to disagree.) If providing more or atleast better protection at start-up (@ start-up is where the Majority of wear takes place) is not what you consider wise, then Dino away!

*Sorry, i know this is a long post..

It's a good post. Since you are in NC, NC State did a study on oils for the state and found Royal Purple to be the best option when the state wanted to reduce fuel and maintenance costs in their motor fleet.

That's what initially sold me on RP and I have had nothing but better experiences ever since.

so....if i went for a full synthetic oil straight from a full conventional oil.....would that be bad?

my biggest worry is discovering leaks that the conventional oil plugged up.

since im rather early in the process of fixing up the jeep....perhaps my best bet would be a conventional oil and cheaper filter....drive and fix it over the next 3k miles....then replace again with full synth? or should i start off with a synth blend now?

(right now im still leaning towards the valvoline max life 10w30 synth blend and the bosch oil filter....no real reason why....but thats what im gonna get unless someone tells me its totally wrong)

This really isn't something that can be instructed as direction to a successful switch over. I think the proof as to why you want to do the switch is in your above statement "my biggest worry is discovering leaks that the conventional oil plugged up." how would anyone not want to fix that ASAP?? Could you discover a leak?? Absolutely, does that make the switch over bad, absolutely not. That means you are cleaning up the crapola` in there and hopefully preventing further damage/buildup to be done.

Will the direct switch be bad? No, but that does not mean that it will be leak free. Take the analogy of a mud covered jeep, that the owner does not want to wash it because they fear it may show there's rust on the body?? <--I think most(i use that term loosely) would say that's just plain foolish but that is the argument that keeps a lot people on Conventional oil.

Since you are so early in the process, I would just get the best value Synthetic that is SL rated and a Great Quality Oil Filter(P1, Wix, Mobile1).. That advance deal this month I think is pretty strong. You are not going to hurt anything by using a blend just in my opinion not getting the best bang for the buck.

alrighty, i guess ill make the full synth jump.

only thing is, the next thing on my list to fix is the valve cover gasket. should i fix this before changing the oil, after, or does it matter?

keep in mind, the jeep is not my DD at the moment, so there wouldnt be too many miles between repairs either way.

and i noticed that code for a discount in your sig

i will be using it.

also, if i do get the oversized 301 M1 filter, is there an adapter i need, or will that bolt right on?

and....i read the XJ takes 6 quarts of oil....so with that oil deal i guess ill need an extra quart.

EDIT: the only reason i didnt really want ot find leaks is because my laundry list is kinda long already

I don't believe it will matter the order as long as you do not get a bunch of debris in the engine when you do the change. So whichever you feel comfortable with.

Filter wise that filter will screw right on for the 2001.

You should need about 6 but it all matters on how much you get out, since you are using the oversized filter it may need a little over 6..??
