Ok so, don't laugh, but im changing the oil in my XJ tomorrow for the first time and I have a couple questions about oil. Ok I know I need 5W-30, but after that im lost. Is there a good and bad brand of oil? Is there any advantage to getting synthetic vs "regular"? What's the difference? Any special kind of filter I should get? Thanks for the help.

I use 10-30 castrol with purolator pure one filter. I ran royal purple for awhile and noticed no improvements worth spending the extra cash. More than you'll ever need to know about oil.http://www.bobistheoilguy.com

Uh oh.... the oil question....

I just use 10w 40 valvoline premium conv. with a K&N oil filter. Works good for me.

Cherryokee's had a steady diet of Valvoline Durablend (semi-synth) for it's whole life (now 165K miles - oil change due today). As-of ~125K miles I started using Valvo MaxLife. Approximately 200-300 miles before the next oil change is due I'll add about a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil.

A little off topic but just wondering, when you add the Marvel Mystery Oil are you draining any oil first? Or are you just pouring it right in. I have thought about adding some of that or some engine restore.

That's why I add only about 1 pint.

...and by the end of the used oil's life-cycle the level is already down far enough that it doesn't represent an overfill.

BTW: I also add MMO in the trans and ps, and regularly to the fuel (since new).

Every other oil change I use 1qt Of Marvel in place of 1qt of oil and have been for 7 years now. I don't buy snake oils, But Marvel works and it smells good lol. I've used the Engine Restore as well, but Marvel is better IMO.

Oh boy another OTB thread....
I've used Shell Rotella 15w40 for years.
If its not a high mileage engine and you want a little better MPG switch to synthetic 5w30 or maybe even a 0w30.
I use WIX or Motorcraft Filters.
End of story.

Hey Caish! You can color me stoopid if you want to but please riddle me this: What is "OTB", as in "another OTB thread"?
