Hey guys,

I'm a newb when it comes to CB radios, We don't have much use for them in the suburbs of NYC so it will basically be used a few times a year while wheeling. I would rather not mount one since it will get limited used. How much radio do I actually need? How much range will I lose by getting a handheld?

If its just for trail runs get a cheap one from a pawn shop or radio shack. That's what I did, you don't need much.

That's what I was thinking but I don't even want to mount and wireup a CB that's going to get limited use. If the $100 handheld will give me the same range as a $50 Radio Shack CB I'd rather go handheld. I just have no idea how limited a handheld CB is.

A handheld will probably be fine for you.

Just get a handheld since you will barely be using it. Depends on brand you are purchasing.

A handheld will be great for car to car communications. Don't expect much range though. I'd say a mile or two realistically. The main advantage to the handheld is mobility.

X2 I've used them before. They are good for short distances.

I got mine off of Amazon, for like $40... coupled with a $15 magnetic antenna. It's been pretty good to me, though I did have to mount it. And, I mean, even just for looks...

OK, I think I may have found what I need. The box mounts under the dash, all controls are on the mic. I can unplug the mic when I don't need it and the box is out of sight. I will have to get the "RC car" antenna though.

Anyone using this CB?

I love my midland 100LWX, its compact and fits nicely right by the center console, I also have a Cobra 29, but it's huge and I don't use it LOL

I use and would recommend this setup:

Amazon.com: Cobra 19DXIV 40 Channel Mobile Compact CB Radio: Car Electronics Amazon.com: Cobra 19DXIV 40 Channel Mobile Compact CB Radio: Car Electronics

Amazon.com: 3' FIRESTICK II TUNABLE TIP BLACK: Electronics Amazon.com: 3' FIRESTICK II TUNABLE TIP BLACK: Electronics

Amazon.com: 18' RG-58/U Coaxial Cable With Pl-259 Connectors: Electronics Amazon.com: 18' RG-58/U Coaxial Cable With Pl-259 Connectors: Electronics

Not handheld by any means, but very reliable.

Also if you're worried about mounting, don't be. My antenna is screwed on via the factory tail light bolt. My CB radio was stuck to my shifter console with industrial strength Velcro. And my CB wire was routed through the molding of the Jeep. Didn't need any holes anywhere, so it was easy to remove and put back in. I changed this later on. You can check out my build thread for more on that.

Almost the same as the one I recommended, but mine has the RF gain control for an extra $2.
