Don't assume that southern California means little to no rust. They do salt in the mountains some, and then there are the beach cruisers. You get a bonus with those - salt AND sand!

Just plan on doing the cooling system. New hoses, radiator, water pump, thermostat. Flush the thing, too. Then you know what you have.

Clean all the grounds. Just do it. You'll save a lot of headaches. While you're at that job, check the battery cables and connections. Lots of trouble can lurk there. Corrosion creeps up under the cable jacket.

There are a couple of members here who sell battery cable upgrade kits. Not a bad idea, but don't waste your money on the uber-big welding cable upgrade. There's no benefit to it. The 4 gauge kit is a nice one-step-up from factory. Don't waste your money on the head-to-firewall ground "upgrade". The factory braid is already massive overkill. It's just for suppressing radio noise. It should never carry more than a few micro-amps, and you don't want it to.

Another option is to roll your own with custom cables from BestBoatWire, and military style terminals from Crimp Supply. That's what I did, and I really like it. Go with the clear heat shrink on the cable terminals and you'll always be able to see what's going on inside. Nice.

Thanks Mark, glad there's some other misguided folk around on here. I'm stationed at MCAS Miramar right now.

Immediate coolant upgrades will definitely take place! And I just got done reading your related sig post(s) about grounds. To be honest I really don't know $%@! about electrical gremlins so problems like that are a little daunting to me. Haha! But after reading through I have a much clearer picture of how to tackle those sort of problems in the future.

Thanks for the insight. I'll be sticking around on here and sponging up some info while I wait and continue to save up for my future purchase!

Miramar? News flash! That's not part of the Inland Empire!

That's just down the road a bit from where I used to live.

Also, you mentioned some people on here selling battery cable upgrade kits... I was having trouble locatIng any forum posts myself. If you know of people who still sell these or have a link, could you drop that in here please?

anywhere it rains cars floors rust because water gets in thru the cowl air intake mostly on pass side. it soaks the carpet padding and over the years rots the metal underneath. new floorpans can be installed but you gotta stop the leaks. ive hed 3 other different cars do it,not just jeeps, all possible.

Well... I finally got myself a Cherokee! About a week ago I picked up a 2001 Cherokee Classic with 148k miles. AW4 trans and NP231 T Case.

It wouldn't hold an idle when at operating temp when I purchased it - the cooling system runs well though! Even without a fan shroud. Need to source one of those soon. It had a check engine light and I needed to get smog done, so I got myself some general tune up parts on RockAuto and started cracking at it.

Replaced my injectors, went with 1-holes for now, just to make her roadworthy. Took care of a LOT of my unsteady idle, and she stopped stalling on me.

Next I did spark plugs and my B2S1 O2 sensor. Look at how bad my plugs were!! Literally the worst condition plugs I ever changed.

After replacing all these I reset my ECU and took her for a few high-RPM pulls down the highway to blow out carbon and other crap. Worked well. Got her smogged yesterday and everything is running nice and smooth!!
