Those are the tubes at the Badlands. The water from the creek washes out the bottom and occasionally they refill it. Water depth depends on the rain fall. Never done it, but I like watching others try. Crappy picture, but this was after a good rain.

Because if your motor is under you will suck water in mass amounts.
Obviously if your motor is running, you don't have much water in it.
Common misconception is damage to motor running in water. The damage happens after the motor has died, and its re started without the proper procedure.
I have literally drowned out over a hundred times over the years. Its does not have to be a terrible experience.
Best example I can give you is this old fellow had a jeep. He said his valves were gummed up. He had me floor the motor while he dumped 5 gallons of water straight down the carb! Thats before I had any experience in the matter.
Now if your motor dies because of too much water then so be it. Do NOT try and re start it.
Pull it to high ground and remove the spark plugs. Pump all the water out. Drain air box completely. If oil is full of water drain it right away. Install old plugs and carry on. Water will not foul plugs. Your old plugs will be fine.

^^that looks fun!
^^true. my jeep drank water straight through the airbox at a deep water crossing. it died immediately the water was so deep it was rushing over my lap with no doors. winched it out pulled the wet filter/spark plugs turned it over and it spat out all the water. plugs back in and kept on trekking. changed the oil when I got home and it's been fine ever since

Perfect example. But I bet you still had that "oh crap!" feeling.
