Keeping it stock
I have had my 89 Cherokee for a week now and I have been reading alot about mods and changes. From a weeks worth of driving I do not have that much of a todo list which I am very happy about.
What I want to know is how may of you have kept your XJ stock (no lift or mods).
My previous weekend money pit was a 1971 Scout II. I was never happy with it after I lifted it and started tinkering so I think that I will leave this one alone and enjoy the ride, so to speak.

We've kept my wife's 95XJ pretty much stock, keeps her out of trouble and a reliable child hauler in the driveway.
Mine on the other hand................................not so much.

You hit on one of my reasons for keeping it stock. My wife would not even think about driving the Scout (looking back I am not sure I blame her). However, I want something that is capable enough to handle snow, ice, water mud, etc as an alternative to her getting out her Pilot (hell of a car by the way).
This one is not a daily driver but I intend to make it a dependable back up/bad weather car.

Mines staying stock. Just adding a nice sound system, new wheels (stock size, nothing huge), and a roof rack to haul my bikes with. I already installed step bars I got from CL, but that's it for me. No place to wheel around here so no reason to lift it.

If you want to keep it near stock, do a 2 inch BB for about $100 and some 30 inch tires. Makes it still pretty near stock but lets you get that extra bit farther. You wouldnt even need new shocks, but some people want them.

I have had my XJ for about 2.5 yrs now and it has remained stock as far as drive train and suspension goes. If it does what you need it to do then why change it? I do plan on modifying my suspension a bit in the future, but only about 2".

My DD is a 97 with just a 2" BB on it. Still handles like stock, just gives me a little more clearance to play in the mud and keeps my 30's out of the flares.

my '97 is stock. but once my wife drove it, she took my lifted '99. imo my lifted '99 rides and drives 10 times better than my stock one. most aftermarket suspensions ride much better than stock suspension.

My 97 is stock. It's a backup DD for bad weather. (We tend to get flooding down here and my usual car has a low water crossing tolerance.)
It's much easier and cheaper to find replacement parts for a stocker and it doesn't attract attention when I have to have it inspected. Plus, stock size tires are pretty cheap for good quality units.

Love my stock Cherokee and would never think about lifting it. It does just what I need it to do in stock form. I have added a hitch along with transmission cooler and a front baseplate, so I can tow it behind our motorhome. But I'll never mess with the driving dynamics of the vehicle.

Cherokees are awesome out of the box! There's no wheeling to be done near here, just the odd trip across fields and down green lanes when shooting or feeding pheasants etc. That and pulling everyone else out of the snow in winter
Don't get me wrong, I love the crazy things that have been done to Jeeps on here.
