it is purely for marketing, im sure no one cared to think of the XJ when they came up with the name.
just like they resurrected the Dodge Dart name. the new Dart is nothing like the old one, its just for marketing

look at it. it looks like a smaller version of the grand cherokee. so now chrysler can line them up and have the baby "regular" cherokee, or you can step up to the bigger nicer GRAND cherokee.

The GC's are very cool, but they aren't Jeeps.
I mean Jeep as in GP, general purpose vehicle.
Wranglers alone still carry on that concept.
The Liberty was a new concept that broke with the Cherokee and I think this new concept should have a new name, too.
I can see how the marketing works, using the Cherokee's enduring popularity/nostalgia to usher this new vehicle into Jeep's portfolio.
Hell, the XJ's popularity is the only reason the GC wasn't able to simply replace it as the new Cherokee.
I'm admittedly pretty out of touch with the current market.
My XJ was the first vehicle I'd had in 12 years.
I learned to drive on '70's Ford trucks and farm tractors.
The XJ is a great old-school vehicle that gives me those old-school feels.
I understand other people want more interior room, gas mileage, ergonomics and whatnot.
Hey, maybe this new thing will have some real eyebrow-raising features.
I'm not in the market anyway.
I wouldn't get rid of my XJ even if I was so inclined.
It's been so devalued, it's not worth selling, only keeping and loving ;^)

I don't know why they are considered so antiquey these days.
They're not suited for modern driving styles, I guess?
Too much torque and not enough, um, I dunno...
Probably has to do with dimensions and contemporary body profiles.

Heck do we even have the tech to make that o,d stuff anymore lol?? I love my xj but them bringing back the Cherokee isn't gonna make me lose sleep. Also a friend of mine brought up a good point.. A lot of 4wd guys never liked the Cherokee when it came out it wasn't meant for offroad use really. But look what we use them for now.. Offroad! Who's knows it could turn out to be a hell of a project jeep in the future have an open mind.

The Cherokee is named 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine’s “4x4 of the Year”."
Not to mention this new Cherokee is fwd and non solid axles. Ya, one hell of a project jeep.

Ya I mean it wasn't named 4x4 of the year when it was introduced or anything. O wait, it was: "The Jeep Cherokee and Wagoneer are introduced as smaller companions to the full-sized Grand Wagoneer.

I won't buy one and honestly i don't care what other car jeep comes out with to sully the jeep name. However, using the Cherokee name a complete play at riding on the famous and best selling model. The liberty, which replaced the cherokee, never met the same sales as our cherokees. Jeep knows and is taking advantage of that. There is no resemblance to the cherokee at all, so if they asked me, I'd leave the cherokee name alone. Besides, imagine going to the local autoparts store now: i need a waterpump for a 2000 cherokee.
Which one, the baby one, the big one, or the fugly one?

Compare a 2001 Cherokee and the 2014 side by side and you will see similarities. The fenders, fog lights on the bottom, grill, just look at it lol. You guys are looking at it once and immediately throwing it out cause it doesn't look the way you want it? Shut up and go design it then lol. Everyone wanted the Cherokee back. They finally bring it back and everyone's butthurt cause the headlights aren't square and it's fwd with independent suspension. Fwd is way better in snow or mud. Hands down and independent suspension? I wouldn't mind not feeling every little bump. This will do great on the market

Sorry to start a controversy.
The original idea for creating this page and the hope is to keep the Cherokee name from being ruined. I don't like the vehicle more than anyone else but to ask jeep to change the design would be impossible. That would take far too much money for them to even consider. And like stated its just what they have to do to keep the wrangler. However i feel it wouldn't be much hassle on their part to continue to let the name be as a legend. As far as i know its not too late for them to reconsider.
Us jeepers need to stick together. Remember when it comes down to it, we're all here for the same reason. We love real Jeeps!

The inline six is the most perfectly balanced engine design, which is why BMW used them so extensively until the last decade or so.
I don't know why they are considered so antiquey these days.

i would love to see a modern DOHC direct injected straight six enter the market, but theres just no way chrysler is going to do that any time soon.
