Start with the basics. Drain and replace all fluids. Check the fan clutch. Get all the little upkeep things out of the way first.

I have an 86 2dr with the V6 as well. I'm up in CenCal in Fresno and Visalia/Tulare.
Like said above check the fluids and general maintenance stuff first before you get to spending money/time on mods and upgrades. Personally i've had to replace old cracked brake lines and some small engine parts and adjustments to pass smog. Also if you have 3" of lift and are going to be on the market for tires you could probably go up to 31" tires.
If you go through the "Build" section you can see what people have done, whats worked for them and what hasn't, and even see other people's feedback. Tons of ideas and advice.

Thanks, I am in the Antelope Valley(Lancaster). Have replaced the carb. throttle shaft, EGR valve and Cat Converter to get it to pass smog. Hope to get the Smog done Monday.
