Jeep Cherokees were not made in 2002.

Jeep Cherokee and grand Cherokees are different. Oil filter is most likely on the drivers side of the engine. Most likely it will be leaking because of the damn seal, but drivers side of the engine for the online 6 engine.

What motor?

On the 4.0 the filter will be on the passenger side near the bottom back of the motor. It's a PITA to get off. I run Mobil 1 Synthetic 10W30, I believe. If you have a 4.7 or 5.2 it will be different. 4.0 takes 6 quarts.
