I am currently a toyota celica owner, and get about 25mpg, but I now have two jobs and have always wanted to buy a cherokee, 4WD, and something thats good for offroading. I am on a tight budget, and need something that gets good city mileage. I'm looking for one from around 2000-2005.

Well, the best Jeep engine is the 4.0 inline-6 engine, which isn't too good on gas. Most people get between 12-16 MPG with it. If you want good gas mileage, settle for a Wrangler, and get a 4 cylinder. It's not as good on gas as a Celica, but it's better than the 4.0. Why not just use the Jeep occasionally, thereby allowing poor MPG? If you're on such a tight budget, maybe you should reconsider buying a different vehicle.

Nothing. You gotta pay to play. However the good news is the best investment you can make with a Jeep is buying a second vehicle. My vote is sell the Celica to some 17 year old ricer kid for a good chunk of change, spend the majority on a comfortable car with decent mileage then spend the last 500-1000$ to buy a XJ for offroading.

You'll never get good mileage out of any jeep. Not anywhere NEAR 25mpg.

Haha, yeah... Wrong vehicle for economy... There is one dude with a thread going, he's claiming ~26mpg in his 4.0L. But if your me, 18 is like some kind of godsend. Haha... Badass in anything? Check. Easy on the wallet? Hell no.

Agreed with OttawaXJ! Get yourself a decent 2nd car, I'm a fan of 6cyl over 4 cause 4cyls are generally to gutless for me, but the name of the game is MPG's, and I'll bet you can get 30 mpg in that Celly...! I got 38, count em, 38! mpg's in my 93 Saturn! Granted I was babying the stuffing out of it, but 38 mpg's!!! I was ecstatic!

The 4 cylinders only get like 1 or 2 mpg better than the 4.0. Not worth it in my opinion.

If your looking for a 2000-2005 your gonna have trouble.

Cherokees were only made until 2001, Grand Cherokees are different...

Nah, that'll get horrid gas mileage. Its just sitting, so no miles will be put on.

The one that gets the best is the one that is pulled behind something, flat style.

That was my next guess.

Some XJ's get decent mileage.. If you keep it stock of course. I have an 89' 5 speed and get around 24 on the highway... In the city I'm not nearly as lucky though. And the recently gone-bad O2 sensor doesnt help. But overall, if you are looking to replace your celica and be comparable on gas mileage... Not the best choice- however, to your point. I would say (for cherokees) the 4.0, base model, 2wd, and 5 speed is going to yield your best mileage. Although you did mention the desire for 4wd-in which case the main factor for fuel mileage is simply the extra weight of the 4wd system. Rambling now... Just a thought for ya

I can get 22 out of mine if I baby it and do a lot of highway driving. That being said, I typically get between, 16-18.

I bought a jeep because I couldn't afford to drive a full size truck.

They're a good compromise.
