Mine is stock with 235/75/15 off brand a/t's and I get 21 if I'm doin a lot of highway driving at 60 mph. I get killed in town though. It averages out to like 17.8 mpg. It's a 98 limited 4wd auto. W/cruise.

17 kills you. I have a cracked exhaust manifold and get 15 mpg best. And 12 worst. With only a 2 inch bb and 31 a/t. And she's a 5 speed

90 XJ 5spd 4x4 bone stock 13 to 18 in town, best on highway 26 between flaggstaff and albuequeque (that place in NM with the name I can't spell) normally though 18 to 22. Not the best for gas sipping but it's better than some of the other vehicles out there.

sounds like mine. my best ever was 22 on a snowboarding trip.(alsways get better mpg when it's cold for some reason(denser air?)) but usually 15-18 and up to 20 on aa highway trips.

Yeah I'm going to call BS on that. Have you verified with a gps that you're actually getting that kind of mileage?

My Dad's TJ can do that on 31's. That's actually not unreasonable.

Do what I would do, own both. This is why my '91 Limited only has 70,000 miles on it. Attachment 113310 Not bad for 21 years old.

I'll tell you what I tell everyone who says they want to get a Jeep and asks me what my MPG is.

1. If you're at all worried about gas mileage, don't buy a Jeep.
2. If you're determined to buy a Jeep, consider the extra cost of gas as a "subscription fee" for owning a great vehicle that you'll love to drive.

best fuel milage i ever got in a jeep was 27 mpg.

it was a 4 cylinder, 4 speed, 1990 jeep comanche.

27, no matter how hard i drove it, even at 85 mph for 3 hours at a time. should have never gotten rid of that thing.

a lil older than what you are looking for lol.

It seems like the 5-speeds get around 20ish if properly tuned. The best I got out of my auto is 19.5, around town it's about 17.

Cherokees were only built through 2001. I think the sweet spot might be a 99 or so (high pinion front axle and HO motor). Some people complain about cracked heads and there is more EPA stuff on the later ones. My 2001 has 2 mini cats and 1 big one and 4 O2 sensors. But it really hasn't been an issue. I wish I had the high pinion front axle though.

I've got a 99 xj and in rural maine most of my driving is highway and I get like 18mpg. My dad has a 2000 xj and he has almost the same ride to work as me and he got 23mpg on his last tank. Its because he drives 48mph everywhere he goes. It seems to be a sweet spot or something because I drive 55mph and get way worse mileage. Not to mention both jeeps have bad cats and over 200k. My dad is pushing 240k. Just my experience. Your mileage may vary.
