I think in some countries you can get a diesel. It was not available in the United States to the best of my knowledge.

I would love an XJ with a modern diesel. The Mercedes Bluetec turbo 3.2 would do very nicely, all 400 pounds of torque of it.

Well it is a Renault 2.1L 4cyl. Turbo Diesel - 85 hp @ 3750 rpm, 132 ft lb @ 2750 rpm - used in 85-87 few where made for the USA but very much sold here when jeep had a short run in with Renault. Right now they are few and far between because they had too little power for what people used the XJ for and the french did not make it able to handle upgrades well. Also parts are very hard to find and cost a ton only some Winnebago dealers can get some stuff. That is why I am worried about it not cause it can not be fixed but is it worth it.
