I used about a quart of bedliner, did the floor, and still had some left over.
Basically for prep, I didn't have to do a lot. My XJ is almost 100% rust free, so all I had to work with was a couple surface spots near the seat posts. I used a wire wheel to knock the rust away, and a DA sander to scuff up the paint a little.
I then used POR15 to get any areas I may have missed with the sander and wire wheel. After the stuff cured, I put down some black primer. After letting that dry, I got a roller and started painting on the bedliner. Its a good project to work on with friends. We all took turns doing the rolling and had a good time.
I let it all dry for about a day and then went over the bedliner with some rubberized undercoating for sound deadening purposes. It made a huge difference.
I put the carpet back in about 2 days later and it's been great ever since.

I have the real tree floor mats and they don't melt. I even have holes right over the exhaust where a jack stand went through the floor and they don't melt. however, the trans tunnel does get hot and the road noise sucks.

Agreed. Now lol 2 years later I'm thinking I'm just gonna spend the money and rhino line it. I may keep down the heat a little. I'm trying to keep my AC in and it's hard without the carpet. But I don't regret it. That smell of wet dog carpet bye bye
