Default I6,V6 or both.

I am looking to buy a cherokee and I see ads with I6 engines and V6 engines. Did jeep use both in the cherokee ? If they did is one any better than the other ? Thank you

4.0L I6 is the best motor the cherokees came with

The V6 came in them but it was a 2.8L chevy engine with no guts at all and only came in the early xj's 84-86? im not sure the last year they came with.

Don't quote me on this but i'm thinking in was in 88 when they discontinued the chevy. It sure was gutless and nowhere near as reliable as the 4.0, although trooper owners with that engine love them. There were also in the early models Renault based 4 and 6 cylinders but were replaced with GM motors.

99% of the time when people say V6 its because they're stupid and dont realize its an I6. I cant tell you how many times I've seen ads for cherokees and I show up and its a grand cherokee or it says 2001 Jeep Cherokee V6 or something similar.

The 2.8L I believe was discontinued in 87 or 88, not completely sure. Since then its basically just the 4L, although I've seen some people talk about the 2.5L 4cyl in the cherokee but I've never seen it.

Does the grand cherokee use a V6 instead of the I6 ? Any opinions which may be better, the I6 or the V6 ? Thanks

I6 vs v6 is like comparing the towing capacity of a geo metro to that of an F350. Thats how much better the I6 is.

No, Jeep didnt use V6s at all to my knowledge until they came out with the joke, JK and IFS monstrosity that is the Liberty.

By the way a 2 minute search would have answered all these questions.

Answers your year and engine questions.
The 2.8 V6 was rated like 110hp, I have one in a 88 GMC S15 Jimmy, reliable to a fault but had about as much power as a Yugo.
It was like driving a Loaded Semi up hills towing a 2000# trailer.
Down shifty early and often.
