Default I now see how dangerous this thing is

Today i was stuck, alone, in a creek. I'm pretty sure it was private property so i couldn't call anyone, and i was miles from a road. Tried to clear a steep island with a drop off into the water onto another island about 5 feet away. I cleared it, went down, the front drivers wheel stayed down, and buried itself and water was about 2inches from rushing into the intake. The rig was sort of tottering on the first island. So the drivers back wheel was on the ground, but the passenger wasn't. Gassing it in 2wheel just bogged out. No movement at all, and the other wheel spun freely. 4wheel buried the front drivers deeper. I couldn't get out unless i crawled thru the passenger side because the drivers was jammed half on the island, half in water. I don't know how i got it, but jamming as many logs and rocks under the wheel that wouldn't touch the ground, and holding reverse in 4wheel did it. AFTER rolling back to the main road, i see my tires flat, and custom rim is destroyed.

SO. the point of my narrative is; how do i make it so my stock gears actually turn my 31 inch tires under load in my D35. How do i keep both turning instead of just the one. At the same time, i'm looking for body parts. The whole front clip is destroyed.

Funny part is, a guy with a Ford stopped to help when i got to the street working on the flat. I told him i get what i deserve for being a kid, alone, unexperienced, and he said nah i have a cherokee too, dont worry about it, its that Jeep thing.

junk the d35, get a 8.8, d44 or a chry. 8.25 27/9 spline and lock it to make both wheels spin. search for a gear ratio chart for your tire size.

you got to love being a teen. this past winter i went up a public road in the la platas, but then decided to turn off the road on what i thought was a trail, it wasnt, it was the creek. got stuck in 4 feet of snow with only one other guy in the car. we were able to dig ourselves out and the had to drive a mile down the creek bed but we got out without killing anyone. been 3 months since then, and im going back on monday. we'll see how i do. (this time im going to have 3 other jeeps with me as well)

You just want both tires to spin, just buy a locking differential. If you don't already know, with your open diff you are only going to have 1 tire spin per axle and that is the tire with the least resistance. In your case the tire in the air had the least resistance so it is the one that spun

X2 alsO remember your e-brake can be used in the situation you had to force more resistance on the loose tire to get the other one to spin.

Ill go ahead and ask, and stop pretending to know, what is spline? 27/9, never really understood that.

How do i lock the D35, or is it just not worth the trouble and buy a new axle?
I was pointed in the direction of a 8.25.

you could just lock the d35 and get away with it on stock tires and up to 31's, but 33's will snap it with stock gears.
that's where you want the 8.25 from the 98 and up that has 29 spline axle shafts where as the earlier 8.25 only had 27 spline axle shafts. hence the 27/9 (27 or /29).

if you're planning on 33's, just replace the d35 now with a locked 8.25.

and don't wheel alone, especially in a no go zone. lol.

To lock it all you do is buy a locking differential, companies make them and they replace some of the gears that are inside your diff right now. A cheaper but good company is Aussie Lockers, there is Lock rite lockers, Powertrax lockers (I have and love). These are spyder gear replacements and are typically called luchbox lockers. The most expensive listed there is the powertrax and mine was $550 with shipping. Aussie can be $300 mabe less if you look.
Then there are full carrier lockers like Eaton lockers and ARB lockers. They are much more but they are super strong. They are really geared toward people with 35+ tires that do tough wheeling.
For what it sounds you get into then a simple luchbox locker should do. My buddys run an Aussie locker in his 8.25 with stock 3.55 gears and 33 inch tires for over 2 years now and has never had a problem
