I never knew
I never knew why, so i thought i would would ask. It might sound silly but, why do some people mount there shocks like this instead of the "stock" way?
This is the "stock" way im talking about

Start here and if it doesn't cause your brain to explode, then keep searching.
It's a good read, but very tech. Basically the manufactures need to give the consumer a good ride, while maintaining a profit and minimizing liability.
Shock that are mounted like your post offer great articulation but lose their ability to maintain high speed control.

second pic is for sure a ford 8.8" out of an expo the top one looks to be one as well with new hangers. the gas tank and exhaust looks exactly like a ranger now that i stare at it but an MJ makes alot more sense. guess i have been hanging out on the ranger forums to much

To answer you original question, the first pic is better offroad while the "stock" setup is better onroad. the first pic ensure easier flex without having super long travel shock because of the angle, the axle can drop more without pulling out the piston rod as far but on the road, the angle makes it so the force of a bump is trying to twist the shock rather than push down on it causing a stiffer ride.
