I am a noobie with a recently acquired 1999 Cherokee Sport Classic with automatic transmission and Selec-Trak. I have read the owners manual, but the instructions are poor.

How do I:

- get the transfer case into NEUTRAL for flat-towing behind a motor home.

- get the transfer case into 4-wheel drive part-time vs. full-time

Please provide me with some detailed instructions, if u pls, along with where the transmission needs to be in park or neutral or whatever.

Also, how do I ensure that the front hubs are engaged for 4WD and not engaged for flat towing.

Put the transmission into neutral then select your tcase gear. For flat towing neutral & neutral. If you have locking hubs which is unlikely then look at them & turn according to the arrow that says unlock!

 

I had difficulties getting the transfer case into neutral. It kept going into "full-time 4WD" ...

 

You might need to get under it, & adjust the linkage.

 

Transfer cases are hard to shift usually, just work with it. As long as you first put the transmission in neutral and then the transfer case in neutral..... You will be fine. All my jeeps transfer cases have been very stiff..... I see it as a good thing because I know when it's in and and not in gear.

 

You may have to set the parking brake when shifting into neutral/4lo, then you can just take the brake off after shifting

 

also remember there is a gate set up. if your just trying to pull strait back it wont go in you need to move to the left or right around the gate.

also I get the jeep rolling just a little while shifting the tcase it then slides right in. (you dont need to go but maybe 2 feet at most).

my tcases have never been stiff at all

 

Mine is. I usually throw it in reverse and back up like an inch just to make sure it locks in 4wd before I go, and then do the same when I switch back to 2wd. Auto locking hubs can be sticky some times.

 

Is there anything I could do to make my t case "stiffer". I have trouble knowing whether it not it in 4 hi

 

I know about the sport and classic but OP, wtf is a Sport Classic

 

is this an auto or a 5 spd?
for auto, put gear selector in neutral, then pull the 4wd lever while pushing the lever to the right, count each selection while the shifter moves back/down. you will feel it move into part time, then full time, then neutral.
or you can simply pull all the way back into 2wd part time, then push forward one selection to neutral.
then place gear selector back into park.

for 5 speed, select neutral, then same procedure for 4wd shifter, then select gear shifter into first gear.

when you select the 4wd shifter into neutral, this disengages all driveline into neutral. you want it in gear (auto) so the transmission isn't turning and drying out your seals as the pump doesn't work with vehicle off. you want the trans in park to stop all gears from turning.

5spd is possible to leave trans in neutral. but selecting a gear is preferred.

there are no locking hubs in the newer jeeps. so no need to worry about that.

 

I always have luck keeping mine in drive and shifting into 4wd high. Into low of course shift into neutral then go to 4wd lo.

 

yes, you can shift into 4hi (part time or full time) on the fly at speed up to 50mph.

 

Flat towing, put the transmission in Park, and the transfer case in neutral or you'll screw up the transmission. Check the owners manual.
