How to measure the offset of a rim

I bought some rims for my jeep guy said they would fit, the are 5 lug but the offset is bigger then 4.5 how do I measure the offset so I can figure out what adapters I need to buy.

That's only either 1mm or .5mm of difference. I can't really imagine that A)it would be a big deal or B) they make anything that slim.
And again is the offset positive or negative? If it's negative and the new one is more negative then it shouldn't matter at all. If it's positive and the new one is more positive, again I can't imagine 1mm of difference will matter.
edit: offset is measured in mm and backspacing is measured in inches, are you sure it's the offset you are concerned about?

Measure from the center on one hole to the BACK of the third hole.This is the easiest way to estimate a 5-lug bolt circle.

granted this measurement is for the actual lugs on the vehicle, I see no reason you can't use the same measurement to measure a rim(within a reasonable range of accuracy)
