I'm not a car person, so I have no clue what it is other than that it's just something that particular engine does.
My engine knocking story, so my Jeep has had a knock for over 60K miles and for the past 20K miles I've had low oil pressure and when coming to a stop the oil pressure would go to 0, so pretty much I was driving with a bad oil pump and never replaced it which is probably why my knock kept getting worse lol. I did have a new engine waiting to go in for like ever so I didn't care lol About a few weeks ago I was driving home and the knock got about 50 times louder and I lost all power and limped it back home. After pulling my oil pan found one piston had exploded and was sitting at the bottom of the oil pan, I'm not trying to scare you, but this is what happened to me.

But It seems to me that this loud knock you have is probably the same sounding knock I had and it could very well be worn pistons. Yes these engines make some noise, but a loud knock from my opinion does indicate something is worn. How does your oil pressure look? Do you you have any Jeep friends that could take a look at it for you?

My 99 has 420,000 on the clock. It got a new head at around 300K.
It starts right up runs well, it does have noisy wrist pin in cyl 5.
