Why do people call it a 4x2 when its a 2 wheel drive?

Driving offroad with open differentials it's more like this;
4x4 = one rear wheel and one front wheel
2WD= one rear wheel

no, the low range system resides in the transfer case. 4x2 doesn't have a transfer case, thus no low range.
