How bad IS the non c clip Dana 35?
Just wondering since the xj I got my 4.10 geared front end from has a non c clip 35 in it. Would make life alot easier and cheaper since these front and rear ends cost 85.00 bucks apiece. Are they really that bad? Anyone have personal experience with one? Plan on trail riding the mountains in southcentral colorado. Am running 33 inch tires and would probably put a lunchbox locker in it.Saving money is the main goal here.

I have had 2 xjs that have had the 35 in the rear and I have not had any problems with 33s but it is not locked either... I have seen 36s on a 35 but he had a super 35 kit.... oh yea he never went offroad either but personally no complaints from me... hopefully I put my 8.8 in soon

I have a D35 c clip with 31's... I ran it for close to four years with a Detroit locker in the rear and the locker failed before the D35. They are weaker... it's the nature of the beast. BUT If you know how to drive with it and know how to play with it you can make them last. A super 35 kit is good. They are expensive. If you plan on taking on mostly trails and some mild off road trails that aren't big into rocks or tires over 32" I am pretty sure that you can just go with it. This is just me though and many people will tell you to run screaming away from them.

Running trails in Colorado I would look for a replacement for your 35. Many people have made them work without issue, but many have broken on mountain trails and Colorado has some of the best, ( read roughest ) I've seen. If you are doing hard trails you'll need lockers, and if you run a 35 locked on hard trails you'll probably end up breaking the R&P or an axle shaft. You can replace your 35 with a Chrysler 8.25 or 8.8 cheaper than the cost of a Super 35 kit, and have a good size R&P plus stronger shafts.
